King County was originally named after William Rufus King the Vice-President of the Washington Territory prior to Statehood. In 1986 black political leaders pushed to have it renamed after Martin Luther King and the county council vote approved it in 1986. But the State of Washington by law can only charter counties so it was not officially recognized until April 19, 2005. The logo was then changed and approved on March 12, 2007.

King County was originally part of the larger Thurston County of the Oregon Territory. It stretched all the way to the Olympic Peninsula in what is now Kitsap County. During Prohibition, the peninsula prohibitionists threatened shut down Seattle's taverns and honky-tonks, an independence movement spearheaded by Doc Maynard saved seattles entertainment district.
