The first western settlers in 1860 called the area Titusville. As a result of a blight affecting hops in Europe and the British Isles, Titusville soon became a booming farming center. The bountiful harvest was primarily sold to Kent County, England. In honor of the source of their new found wealth the residents renamed their town Kent. With a population of just under 800, the City of Kent was the second city incorporated in King County on May 28, 1890.

At the close of the Second World War, as the heart of post war industry, Kent grew a dozen times over. However it did not fully mature until the Green River was finally tamed with the construction of the Howard Hansen Dam. This ushered a new era of growth and Kent soon became host to distribution centers stretching from Tukwila to Sumner. The area is the second largest distribution center in the USA.
